Preventive Care for Dogs

Commit to a lifetime of health.

Puppies require several routine veterinary appointments, but health care is also important for the health of adult dogs. Your dog will need to visit the vet at least once a year for routine care.  If you are in Draper, UT, consider South Mountain Canine Reproduction and Pet Care for your pet's needs.

Annual Exam

An annual exam is a key part of dog healthcare. Your veterinarian will ask you questions about your pet's health and lifestyle. These include their diet, exercise, and any issues that you have noticed. They will also perform a physical examination. Blood and urine testing may be performed to screen for health conditions. Since your dog cannot tell you if they are experiencing symptoms, these screenings are an important part of dog healthcare. A fecal sample may be analyzed as well to check for parasites.

Heartworm Prevention

Heartworm disease can cause damage to your dog's organs, so heartworm prevention is an essential part of care for your furry friend. Heartworm prevention was once only available as a monthly tablet, but now an injection by your veterinarian can provide one year of prevention. In addition to the injection, your vet may perform a yearly test to check for heartworms. Heartworms can be treated, but they must be caught in the early stages to prevent organ damage.

Vaccinations

Once your dog is finished with the puppy vaccine series, it will still require booster shots for some diseases. Rabies vaccine must be given once a year or every three years, depending on the vaccine used. DHHP requires boosters at one year after the puppy series, and every 3 years afterward until the dog reaches eight years old. Other vaccines may be recommended depending on their exposure risk, which considers their location and lifestyle. An annual exam allows you to be sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccines.

Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas are a rare problem in Utah. If you plan to travel out of state with your dog, you should use a flea-prevention product before you leave. Ticks are another matter. Ticks are a problem in Utah, and they can carry Lyme disease. Most prevention products protect against fleas and ticks. The simplest solution is to use a combination product, especially if your pet spends time outdoors.
